Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street

The first time I heard this song it was a Thursday I believe. A really sweet guy I knew DJ’ed this funk night at a really shitty bar/hotel, or hotel/bar that had a really disgusting swimming pool. Inside it looks like a lot of bars you might know, long narrow room, low ceiling, smokey, pool tables with tattered felt, a bartender who looked like he never left the place. I think, the appeal was that the drinks were always $2, but somehow you always felt like it was a drink special that was just for you. $2 whiskey sours, no matter what kind of whiskey is always a fucking deal. You can get lit for Fifteen bucks.

And the music was good, I have a deep appreciation of R&B and funk, and the DJ, Steve has an impressive record collection.  I’d been going to this bar because I a girl I had been seeing lived right around the corner, and we’d go there late and stay late.

Right at closing one night, as the lights came on and everyone squinted, this song came on, and I swear to fucking god, it’s like everything slowed down, I finally got this song, of course not in the context that the song talks about, pimps, pushers, drugs, junkies, violence.

But I think we all have our own 110th Streets in our lives. Those imaginary boundary’s that we set up, that if crossed, mean something, and so there they remain.
